Three Pegs Puzzle

Ways to use it

  • Encourage your child to grasp and pull out one peg at a time from the base.
    • Your child may master this step quickly as toddlers often learn to take things out before they learn to put things in.
  • Let your child tap and even throw the peg as these are ways your child explores.
  • Encourage your child to fit the peg into the base. It’s tempting to do it for your child, but allow them to fit the shapes together themselves.
  • It may take a little while for your child to master one peg, but once they do, encourage them to place the other two.
    • Celebrate each accomplishment by praising your child's hard work.
  • You can also show your child how the pegs can be stacked. As your child tries it for themselves, they will start to lay down the foundation for spatial relationships.

Research

1 year to 3 years

The Three Pegs Puzzle helps children practice their pincer grasp. Your child is exploring the world around them and might be pulling toys out of containers or your keys out of your purse. The Three Pegs Puzzle can help further promote the concepts of containment and spatial awareness. Stacking the pegs can help lay the foundation for gravity, balance, and weight distribution.
